The Alluvium neighborhood is part of Voorhees Township in Camden County, a community known for its strong neighborhoods,,excellent schools,, and convenient access to the greater Philadelphia region.
Before becoming the residential neighborhood we know today, much of the Alluvium area was rural farmland and wooded land typical of South Jersey.. In the early 20th century, nearby lakes- often referred to as the Sunshine Lakes area-were popular with visitors from Philadelphia who came to enjoy summer recreation and a peaceful retreat from city life.
Beginning in the 1970s and 1980s, Alluvium was developed as a suburban residential community featuring spacious single-family homes on generously sized lots. Many of the homes built during this period remain today, contributing to the neighborhood's established character and tree-lined streets.
Over time, additional nearby communities-including Alluvium Woods and other surrounding neighborhoods- grew alongside the original development, helping create the vibrant residential area that exists today. The neighborhood's location provides convenient access to local parks, shopping areas, and major roads connecting residents to the broader South Jersey region.
Today, Alluvium continues to thrive as a welcoming neighborhood where residents take pride in their homes,,community spaces, and strong sense of neighborly connection.
The name "Alluvium" comes from geology!
In geology, alluvium refers to soil or sediment-such as sand, silt, clay, or gravel-that has been deposited over time by flowing water, usually from rivers or streams. These deposits often create rich, fertile land and distinctive natural landscapes.
Much of South Jersey, including areas of Camden County, sits on ancient layers of sandy and sediment-rich soils formed over thousands of years. The name Alluvium reflects this natural history and the region's connection to the waterways and geological processes that shaped the land long before the neighborhood was built.
Today, the name is a reminder of the natural foundation beneath our community and the beautiful environment that surrounds us.
The Gibbsboro Air Force Station is a decommissioned air force facility directly across from Alluvium's Victor Blvd. entrance.
